Description
Differentiate vibrios from other Gram-negative rods using Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ 0129 Discs. The test exploits the sensitivity of vibrios to the vibrio static agent 0129 (2,4-Diamino-6,7-di-iso-propylpteridine phosphate)1. 0129 Discs are of great value in differentiating vibrios from other Gram-negative rods and particularly from aeromonads, which are characteristically resistant to 0129. The degree of sensitivity of vibrios to 0129 can also be used as a diagnostic feature in differentiation of Vibrio species.
Vibrio is a genus of comma shaped Gram-negative bacteria responsible for number of foodborne infections often associated with undercooked seafood. Use 0129 Discs as a rapid and simple method for differentiation of vibrios from other Gram-negative rods.

Negative 0129 tests must be interpreted with caution. Strains of Vibrio cholerae resistant to 0129 and trimethoprim have been reported2. Both plasmids and transposons appear to be responsible3.
Specialised sensitivity testing media which contain low levels of sodium chloride should not be used as these may give poor growth of halophilic vibrios and may also give false positive results with Enterobacteriaceae4. Nutrient Agar CM0003 can be recommended for such testing.
