Sodium bicarbonate buffer system is important for several different cellular processes. It is one of the major buffering systems used to maintain the pH of mammalian blood and is also important in the acid-base homeostasis of living things, including humans. It tends to maintain a relatively constant plasma pH and counteract any force that would alter it. It is used to neutralize the pH of the chyme leaving the stomach and entering the small intestine.
