Description

Description

Simplify screening of low vaginal swabs (LVS), high vaginal swabs (HVS), vaginal or recto-vaginal samples for group B streptococci (GBS) and staphylococci/streptococci using Thermo Scientific™ Columbia CNA Agar/Brilliance™ GBS Agar bi-plates. Brilliance GBS Agar eliminates the need for pre-enrichment and, when combined with Columbia CNA Agar, enables you to detect Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and GBS within 24 hours. Streamline your workflow and save space in automated specimen processing, plating and streaking instruments to achieve greater throughput.

Get a full clinical picture of GBS, staphylococci, and streptococci from a single plate with the Columbia CNA Agar/Brilliance GBS Agar bi-plate. One-step inoculation and aerobic incubation simplify workflows to support screening programs.
  • Excellent sensitivity and specificity: detect GBS direct from patient samples without enrichment
  • Fast results: detect Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and GBS within 24 hours
  • Increase throughput: fewer plates to process per sample allows greater throughput in automated specimen processors
  • Easy-to-read: magenta GBS colonies and blue/dark purple non-GBS colonies on the clear medium make results simple to interpret
  • Comprehensive: detect non-haemolytic GBS strains
Brilliance GBS Agar is an easy-to-read chromogenic screening medium optimized to support growth of GBS. Antimicrobial components suppress the growth of non-GBS organisms and Inhibigen™ technology makes Brilliance GBS Agar a highly selective, reliable medium. Eliminate the need for pre-enrichment or re-incubation; simply streak the sample onto the plate, incubate, and read your result after 24 hours. Brilliance GBS Agar saves up to 72 hours compared to traditional media and up to 48 hours compared to other chromogenic media.
Brilliance GBS Agar incorporates two chromogens. One chromogen yields a pink color due to phosphatase activity in GBS. To allow the medium to differentiate GBS accurately, it contains a second chromogen. Non-GBS are either inhibited or grow as blue or purple colonies. Broad-spectrum antimicrobial components in the medium suppress the growth of group A and C streptococci. Also included are compounds to inhibit the growth of Enterobacteriaceae, staphylococci, enterococci, and group D streptococci. Antifungals eliminate yeasts. Furthermore, Brilliance GBS Agar incorporates Inhibigen technology for targeted inhibition of enterococci and group D streptococci, ensuring a high level of sensitivity and specificity and a significant reduction in growth of background flora.
By combining this agar with a traditional media, such as Columbia CNA Agar, staphylococci and streptococci can also be identified.
Traditionally, blood agar bases have contained either casein hydrolysate or meat infusion. The advantage of the first lies in the rapid production of large colonies, and the second in clearly defined zones of haemolysis and good colonial differentiation. Columbia CNA Agar combines these types of media to give an improved all-round performance.

It should be noted that, as with all chromogenic media, organisms with atypical enzyme patterns may give anomalous reactions on Brilliance GBS Agar. Samples containing fecal material or blood may cause some localized discoloration within the medium. This discoloration should not be confused with a true chromogenic reaction where colored colonies are visible.
