Description
Presumptively detect, isolate and enumerate pathogenic staphylococci in milk, food, fish and other specimens while most other bacteria are inhibited, except a few halophilic species, with Thermo Scientific™ Mannitol Salt Agar. Look for colonies surrounded by bright yellow zones to recognize coagulase-positive staphylococci; non-pathogenic staphylococci produce colonies with reddish purple zones.
Clearly and easily differentiate Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis while most other bacteria is inhibited by the high salt concentration.Staphylococcus aureus is a coagulase-positive, catalase-positive, gram-positive cocci that occurs singly or in pairs, tetrads, short chains, and grape-like clusters. It is commonly carried on the skin and in the nose of healthy individuals but is also a major cause of infection in both healthcare and community settings worldwide. S. aureus can produce a variety of syndromes with clinical manifestations, including
skin and soft tissue infections, empyema, bloodstream infections, pneumonia, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, endocarditis, sepsis, and meningitis.
