Thermo Scientific™ Settling Plate Tryptic Soy Agar

Description

Isolate and cultivate wide variety of organisms such as bacteria, yeast and fungi using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Settling Plate Tryptic Soy Agar. This medium is listed in Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater and the Compendium of Methods for the Microbiological Examination of Foods^1,2. This medium is recommended for use in Official Methods of Analysis of AOAC International, the International Dairy Federation (IDF), and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)^3,4. Tryptic Soy Agar slants may be used to cultivate, store, and ship bacterial cultures.

Tryptic Soy Agar is a general-purpose, nonselective medium providing enough nutrients to allow for a wide variety of microorganisms to grow.⁵ It is used for a wide range of applications, including culture storage, enumeration of cells (counting), isolation of pure cultures, or simply general culture. Tryptic Soy Agar is prepared following the standard formula for Soybean-Casein Digest Agar Medium in the United States of Pharmacopeia (USP)⁵. Tryptic Soy Agar many be supplemented with blood to facilitate the growth of more fastidious bacteria or antimicrobial agents to permit the selection of various microbial groups from mixed flora.

This medium contains casein and soy peptones that provide nitrogen, amino acids, and peptides necessary for bacterial growth. Dextrose is a ready source of energy. Sodium chloride supplies essential electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium.
